The Unknown Giant. A Nation Conquered.

Before the excitement of the inaugural championship had even settled, the 2nd All Japan Kendo Championship produced a stunning upset.

On October 10, 1954, at the Memorial Hall in Ryogoku, Tokyo, the title went to Konishi Yuichiro (32) of Fukuoka — an employee of the Nishitetsu Railway Company and manager of the bus terminal in front of Hakata Station. Standing 155cm tall, Konishi had not come through the elite channels of the Budo Senmon Gakko or police tokuren units. He was a self-made kendoka who had earned the Renshi title, yet was almost entirely unknown outside Fukuoka before the tournament.

Tournament Results

In the semi-final, Konishi defeated Abe Saburo (35) — runner-up at the inaugural championship and future Hanshi 9th Dan. In the final, he overcame Nakao Iwao (38), a police instructor from Hyogo, in overtime. An unknown company employee had defeated every police and elite-trained opponent in his path.

What became of Konishi after his victory is not well documented. From the following year onward, police athletes and elite-trained kendoka reasserted their dominance. Konishi's title belongs to the earliest era of the championship — a time when the field was still open to anyone with the ability to win it.
